The Dirty Picture is a Blurb on Porn Fantasy by Khurshid Alam
The dialogue in the movie The Dirty Picture, “When a girl sheds clothes from her dignity, the so-called honourable people enjoy the most.” comes terse but is more correct given the fact that the society is opening up to some facts now.
Film is the mirror image of the real society we are part of. Porn fantasy has always been doting in our bold curiosity shop. But the blurb has been sung now, and so the porn fantasy will stay with us with a wider acceptability. The success of Dirty Picture and Sunny Leone gaining wide popularity pinup the fact. The Porngate scandal in which some political leaders were alleged is yet another example of the fact that enjoying porn material has been with us for long.
This is just opening up now. Recently some MLAs were alleged for watching porn sites on their electronic devices when the state assemblies were in session. Two decades back we were not ready to open up to the reality. When reputed porn magazines were imported into India and they were circulated very carefully lest the others would see the readers of porn magazines and will mar their social image. The socially esteemed people used to thrush such magazines under their beds, drawers of their table meant for personal use—away from others reach. Then came Debonair our very own porn magazine with two female nude models. It is clear that the society has open up now. We opened a little more. Debonair became a successful magazine.
With the participation of Sunny Leone in the Big Boss 5, the society has shown the skin. Soon Sunny gained wide popularity. Sunny was familiar to only those who used to watch porn movies, particularly online. But soon after she participated in the Big Boss 5 she became a household name.
According to a rough estimate, millions of viewers, that included young viewers, females and others, visited her official website in each subsequent month since she became popular on the TV reality show. Soon Sunny emerged as India’s most Googled celebrity beating even as big names as Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, and Kareena Kapoor. Base of her fans reached to even small cities and areas such as Noida, Bhubaneswar, Ludhiana and Bhopal. Her followers on Facebook and Twitter increased many folds. Catching up with Sunny’s popularity, she is being offered roles in Bollywood films.
The Dirty Picture is a film based on the real life of a 1980s porn movie actress Silk Smitha. Silk was a successful porn actress though she belonged to an age when claiming likeness of such actresses in the open was regarded a social taboo. With widening the mindset, the society has grown now and accepts many things once thought to be taboo. The Dirty Picture became a hit.
